BWI of Birmingham - Magic City Slingers
About Us:Founded in September 2006 as Magic City Slingers, Babywearing International of Birmingham offers an extensive sling library, monthly meetings, and the opportunity to participate in babywearing-friendly activities throughout the year, such as guided outdoor walks, museum tours, and family picnics. Birmingham is an active, outreach-oriented chapter. Some of its outreach activities have included Magic City Slingfest, for which it won the International Babywearing Week 2008 award for Best Outreach Program to Women in Need; and a booth at the popular Babypalooza event at Brookwood Mall. The chapter has been featured on local TV news, as well as in local parenting magazines. The chapter maintains a blog, which includes a popular pattern for a no-sew fleece babywearing poncho (shown above). Meeting Information: Birmingham meets at the Hoover Library on the first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m., downstairs in meeting rooms A, B and C. Sling check-in, guest and member meeting sign-in, and general help are from 10 to 10:30. Leaders and members do demonstrations and discuss a particular babywearing topic at 10:30. The chapter's sling library is open from 11 to11:30 for members to check out slings, and meeting participants give and receive one-on-one help during this time as well. One-on-one help often continues until around noon. Like all chapters, Birmingham's meetings are always free to attend and open to all interested caregivers. Guests may try on baby carriers in the sling library during meetings, but sling checkout is a members-only benefit.
