Part of the Southern Natural Parenting Network, South Eastern Babywearing Group was created in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia in early 2014. With a focus on safe and comfortable babywearing, the group has 1600 members and holds weekly meets through the area. Run by volunteers, we have six peer educators.

What is your baby wearing group or organization doing to celebrate IBW 2017?

After the success of our event in 2015 and a year off to welcome new babies to the team, we are excited to offer an event at one of our favourite venues: a family-friendly cafe in a restored retired church in the village of Tyabb.

How has your group incorporated the 2017 theme into your IBW celebrations?

We are Threaded Together with local wrap manufacturers and retailers who are members of our network and welcome on the day to share their wares. As well, in celebration of the threads we weave within our group, through the sharing of wisdom and technique, our members are bring together their pre-loved carriers for our very first buy/swap/sell opportunity – keeping community carriers in the community.

East TN Valley Babywearers

We are a registered nonprofit organization that has the primary focus of providing babywearing education and support to our community within the East TN Valley. As part of that focus, we host six monthly meetings throughout the area at varying times to reach as many people’s needs as possible. During these meetings we provide hands on help using baby carriers of all styles with our trained wearing mentors. We also try to focus on a sense of community by providing varying events throughout the month such as hikes/walks, play dates, meetups, and more. Our group has around 100 paid members that have all joined within that last year; as we just celebrated our first birthday in September. We have fathers on our board of directors as well as educators which is fairly uncommon and helps us to make babywearing more welcoming for all genders. We not only provide our monthly meetings but monthly workshops, classes and more to make sure we are doing as much as possible to reach as many people as possible. We also have a low membership fee, varying levels, scholarships and discounts to keep our group accessible. There are plenty of extra membership perks too we are always growing. We offer a pouch exchange program, free home visits during your “babymoon”, a little wearers club library, discounts with local businesses and services, media library and more. We try to be as well rounded to best support our area as we possibly can be.

What is your baby wearing group or organization doing to celebrate IBW 2017?

We have at least one event every day of the week, some days more than one event because we want to make sure everyone is able to attend based on their schedules. Some of those events are a pumpkin patch meetup, a day of free mini workshops, a babywearing parade, a movie meetup, a party( of course ;-), a free event to make wrap scrap dolls, extra play dates, coffee meet ups, and more! In addition to the in person events we are doing online events every day with special blog posts, online activities including a week-long scavenger hunt so even those who may not be able to come out in person can still celebrate IBW!

Some of our online games and activities are going to play off of the threaded together theme and we are doing what we can to “thread into our community” by networking with local sponsors to be able to play games with World of Warcraft with the best mouse for world of warcraft and other hardware, finding local places to meet up and work with and we plan to do some fun “field day” style events at our party playing off the theme as well.
